The Last Line Assignment

November 24, 2009

For our last assignment, we were expected to get into groups of about 5 people and make all of our words collaborate into either a movie, a visual performance or a theatrical performance.

My group consisted of:     Beth Antes—texture

                                                    Courtney DeNoto—overhead

                                                    Rebeccca Ellis—invisible

                                                    Jacqueline Jacob—memory

                                                    Harriet Smith—detail

We focused on the aspect “The Things On The Line That Go Unnoticed” because all of our words kind of pertain to unnoticed things, or things that aren’t noticed at a first glance.

We filmed a video of us talking on certain parts of the line, took still shots of different parts of the line and recorded our voices talking about different parts of the line as well. All in all we ended up with a great nature documentary like film remembering our memories on the line.

We split the line up into 5 major sections; Alfred State, The Creeks, Main Street, Harder Hall, and The Woods. Harriet took on Alfred State explaining how the tennis courts had been taken over by nature. Jacqueline explained how the creeks reminded her of past childhood memories of playing in the water, looking under rocks and splashing around. Rebecca explained her thoughts on Main Street, wondering what was there before the buildings were. Courtney talked about how the ceiling and lighting fixtures in Harder Hall go unnoticed, and I talked about how there is texture everywheres, it’s impossible to escape texture.

The Line: Informational Structure

November 16, 2009

For my Informational Structure, I picked 4 objects I found along ‘The Line’ and then connected their textures to other objects, whether they could be found on the line or not. I kept connecting textures until the 4 original objects were connected to things completley different.

The Line: Deep Within Texture

November 8, 2009

Thinking deeper into the idea of texture, I wondered what made texture. Looking up the microscopic images of three of the most found substances on the line, and then posting what the object was, we can see the basic structures that help to form the substance or object and what may make the difference between making it smooth, rough, or a variety of other textures.

The Line: Walking With A Blurred Vision To Observe Texture Up Close

November 8, 2009

Another idea of mine actually happened on accident. One day when I was about to go walk the line, I forgot to put my contacts in. Being as blind as I am I could barely see 20 feet ahead of me clearly.

Using this idea , I looked ahead of me and being unclear of the objects texture I had to venture closer to see the real texture. Seeing the changes of how I viewed the objects and their texture was quite interesting.

Because I can’t post pictures of what my eyes were seeing as they looked blindly into the horizon, I had to explain the experience through words.

The Line: Walking Barefoot, Observing Texture..And Weird Looks Along The Way

November 8, 2009

I thought that a good way to really get a feel for the texture along the line would be to..literally feel it. Instead of just going the ordinary route of touching what you see along the line with your hands, I figured I’d try to feel texture with my feet. Granted I could only reach so high with my feet, I tried the best I could. This is the first of two walks I took trying to obstruct my regular and first point-of-view of the line, and see the line in a whole different way.

The Line: The Class Walk

November 4, 2009

During class on Tuesday, October 27th, we walked the entire line for the first time. Starting up at Alfred State, and walking down, through Cohen Sudio, Harder Hall, Joel’s House and then up and over the hill on Alfred University’s side. This was a very hard walk, there were many places we had to walk around instead of going through, and very steep and muddy spots as well. Through and through we all made it back to the studio!

The Definition of a Word

November 2, 2009

tex·ture  (tkschr)

1. The distinctive physical composition or structure of something, especially with respect to the size, shape, and arrangment of its parts

2. The characteristic structure of the interwoven or intertwined threads, strands, or the like, that make up a textile fabric

3. The characteristic physical structure given to a material, an object, etc., by the size, shape, arrangement, and proportions of its parts

My definition of texture is the feeling of the surface of something that you can physically touch. Everything around us has texture, nature and man-made items. Touching my computer screen is different than touching a tree trunk. Touching my jacket is different than touching a kitchen counter. Everything has texture. Smooth, rough, bumpy, grainy, scratchy, or silky are just a few different textures I can think of off the top of my head.

I plan to use my word “texture” to document “The Line” and everything I see along the line. Because it is such a broad topic, I plan to find things with a variety of texture. Maybe stop and close my eyes and feel around me would be a good way to approach this assignment.

The Line: Finding Lines Within The Line

October 30, 2009
I thought an interesting way to approach this “line” ordeal would be trying to find lines within “The Line.”
